Gasoline Purchases, Debit Card Can Overdraw Your Account

U.S.A. - Buyer, beware at the gas pump! Oil companies protecting their interests could cost you not only an overdraft in your checking account, but the added grief in having to deal with the fees, and the loss of money out of your account. This pratice is outrageous and should be looked into by the appropriate govenment officials.

The list is growing in oil companies, who are attaching an "unauthorized" charge when the use of a Master or Visa Debit card is used. It is strange that this practice appears to be more prevalent in the use of a Visa Card.

Stations like Amoco, Chevron, Gas City, Shell and Speedway all have some form of charging funds on the account for as much as four days until the original gas purchase amount has safely cleared. Some charge a small verification fee as part of the total purchase. In the meantime if you have no idea this practice is being done -- you are in for a rude awakening in trying to figure out how to replace the loss of funds generated in overdraft or daily fees assessed by your bank.

Slowly gas stations are changing the way we purchase gasoline. Everything will be prepaid inside, or by credit or debit card at the pump.

At Citgo Gas Stations, a one dollar test charge is assessed initially to check card validity and is then added into and becomes part of the total purchase amount. If you purchase $30.00 in gasoline, that's what you pay $30.00.

Amoco under certain use of the card, assesses a $75.00 hold fee for up to four days, which is then refunded. If you want to do business with this oil company using your debit card, you better get on the phone, and find out under what circumstances you could be charged an additional amount. Just because Amoco is utilizing such practices doesn't make it right.

If you're not happy, buy from a different station or pay cash. Even better, start a consumer outcry for BP Amoco to be more responsive to customer needs and to have the business courtesy to post some form of public notification of practices in their stations, and not to take the position of carefree unauthorized use in charging a debit card.

Worse is the arrogant non-disclosure of such practices, which should have been openly made aware to the buying public by the oil companies themselves and not after the "transaction" fact.

It was consumer complaints addressed by the news media that has brought this issue to the forefront. Once again, buyer beware, if you want your hard earned money to stay where it is, in your checking account. Arming yourself with knowledge about what is going on around you, will keep your wallet full and give you piece of mind.

Let the State Attorney in your area know of your concern and displeasure at this questionable unauthorized practice of debiting your card. If you are already aware of this, you should be in good shape.
